Effects of Boulder Arrangement on Flow Resistance Due to Macro-Scale Bed Roughness

نویسندگان

چکیده

Flow resistance in gravel-bed channels is not only affected by the shape and size of roughness elements, but also their arrangement on channel bed surface (position to flow streamlines, spacing between protrusion from bed). Many investigations proved that open can be obtained integrating power velocity profile. For a macro-scale condition, this study aims investigate effect different boulder arrangements resistance. First, for each arrangement, equation relating Γ function profile, Froude number, slope was calibrated using available measurements performed flume covered pebbles with “Random”, “Transversal stripe”, “Longitudinal stripe” arrangements. experimental datasets were divided consider effects concentration Ch. Moreover, relationship “Random” element lower than 48% tested literature coarse elements randomly arranged. Finally, law investigated imposing threshold. The results demonstrated (i) Darcy–Weisbach friction factor accurately estimated proposed equation, (ii) increases Ch low values (<48%) concentration, while it does depend high concentrations (≥48%), (iii) more evident concentrations.

Scaling Effects on Materials Tribology: From Macro to Micro Scale

The tribological study of materials inherently involves the interaction of surface asperities at the micro to nanoscopic length scales. This is the case for large scale engineering applications with sliding contacts, where the real area of contact is made up of small contacting asperities that make up only a fraction of the apparent area of contact. This is why researchers have sought to create...

Calculating bed load transport in steep boulder bed channels

[1] Steep, rough channels occupy a large fraction of the total channel length in mountainous regions. Most sediment mobilized on hillslopes must pass through these streams before reaching lower-gradient channels. Steep channels have wide grain size distributions that are composed of finer, more mobile sediment and large, rarely mobile grains. The large grains can bear a significant portion of t...

Critical conditions of bed sediment entrainment due to debris flow

The present study describes entrainment characteristics of bed material into debris flow, based on flume tests, numerical and dimensional analyses. Flume tests are conducted to investigate influences of bed sediment size on erosion rate by supplying debris flows having unsaturated sediment concentration over erodible beds. Experimental results show that the erosion rate decreases monotonically ...
